PARIS, France – THE SONAR INSTITUTE is thrilled to announce the launch on Instagram of the TikTok trend #NobelPeacePrize, celebrating the Nobel Peace Prize through the inspiring speech of Nobel Peace Laureates such as this week’s: Leymah Gbowee. This initiative contributes here to spread awareness about the pivotal role of women in peace and security, highlighting the powerful words and enduring legacy of Leymah Gbowee.
A Visionary Leader and Advocate for Peace
Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist, social worker, and women’s rights advocate, is best known for leading a nonviolent movement that united Christian and Muslim women to help end Liberia’s devastating fourteen-year civil war in 2003. Her efforts were instrumental in paving the way for the election of Africa’s first female head of state, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. This monumental achievement underscored the essential and uniquely effective role of women in brokering lasting peace and security.
The #NobelPeacePrize TikTok Trend
The #NobelPeacePrize trend on Instagram aims to engage a global audience by encouraging users to create and share TikTok videos featuring excerpts from Nobel Peace Prize speeches. By using hashtags such as #NobelPeacePrize as well as video-specific ones #womenpeacesecurity, @leymahrgbowee, and @gboweepeaceafrica, participants will contribute to a broader dialogue on the significance of women’s strategic participation and leadership in peace processes.
Leymah Gbowee’s Journey
Leymah Gbowee’s journey began at the age of seventeen when the Liberian civil war erupted, transforming her from a child into an adult overnight. Throughout the conflict, she became a young mother and trained as a social worker and trauma counselor, working with ex-child soldiers. Driven by a profound belief in women’s responsibility to future generations, she co-founded the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) and led the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, an interfaith movement that played a decisive role in achieving peace in Liberia.
Her leadership and tactical brilliance were pivotal during the peace talks in Accra, Ghana, where she led a human barricade to pressure the participants to reach an agreement. This act of courage and determination marked a turning point in the peace process, leading to the resignation of President Charles Taylor and the signing of a peace treaty.
Leymah Gbowee’s Global Impact
Leymah Gbowee’s impact extends beyond Liberia. She co-founded the Women Peace and Security Network Africa (WIPSEN-A) in Accra, dedicated to promoting women’s leadership in peace and security governance across Africa. Her story, depicted in the documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” and her memoir “Mighty Be Our Powers,” continues to inspire and mobilize people worldwide.
