Dublin, Ireland — On August 26, 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron visited Dublin for a one-day working trip, where he engaged in a significant dialogue with students and academics at Trinity College Dublin. THE SONAR INSTITUTE is pleased to report that Cillian Geoghegan, THE SONAR’s Regional Representative for Ireland, was among a select group of attendees invited to participate in this distinguished event.

President Macron’s visit to Trinity College included discussions on pivotal topics such as the post-COVID recovery in Europe, climate change, and digital equality. This intimate forum allowed students, researchers, and activists to engage directly with the French President on these pressing global issues. The event, moderated by Vice-President for Global Relations Professor Juliette Hussey, was held in Trinity’s historic Public Theatre and was broadcast live on the Elysée’s channel and national television.

Cillian Geoghegan, THE SONAR Regional Representative for Ireland, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It was an honour to meet President Macron during his visit to Trinity College Dublin. Engaging in discussions about critical global issues with such a distinguished leader was an invaluable experience.” Geoghegan also had the opportunity to meet French Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Vincent Guérend, and French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Clément Beaune, who was present alongside President Macron.

The visit was also marked by remarks from Trinity Provost Linda Doyle, who emphasized the longstanding connections between Trinity College and France. Provost Doyle highlighted the university’s extensive collaboration with French institutions and its historical ties to French culture and scholarship.
